How Homeschoolers Benefit From Online Classes

Homeschooling takes on many forms. There are homeschoolers that use an eclectic style, those that unschool, those that use prepackaged curriculums and still others that rely on distance education to supplement hands-on instruction. Homeschooling has come a long way in the past couple of decades and new homeschoolers are bombarded with educational options. The newness of online classes and the learning curve many homeschooling parents have to go through in the beginning, can make online classes an overlooked resource. Online classes benefit homeschoolers in different ways based on how their homeschool is run.

When students get older, some subjects become too complicated for parents to teach. On the other hand, some students require help beyond what a parent can provide. This is where online classes can benefit both parents and students who home educate. Both schools and organizations provide opportunities to take classes online. Students can continue their traditional from of homeschooling but supplement with online classes for certain subjects. Some subjects that homeschoolers can consider for an online class are geometry, physics, algebra and government. Students can also enroll in online writing classes if they struggle with learning proper grammar, spelling and sentence structure.

One benefit of online classes for homeschoolers is that parents get a little backup when it comes to teaching their child. Most homeschoolers deal with uncertainty at some point, especially in the beginning. Having an outside resource can calm instructional fears parents may be feeling. Instructors vary in their methods and your child may click with an online class instructor in an area they have been struggling in at home. It also gives parents the option of discussing their child's education with the online class instructor to assess strengths and weaknesses. Some online classes require a test before the student can enroll in the class. These tests, which are usually provided free of charge if the student is enrolling, is an easy way for parents to see if their home education program is on track and working well.

One of the biggest benefits of online classes for homeschoolers is that older students can self-direct their learning. This teaches responsibility and time management skills. It also frees up the parent to work with younger kids, run errands or spend time doing something around the house. With online classes, parents get a little bit more freedom from the rigors of homeschooling. Online classes also show colleges that the student can perform well not only in their home education subjects, but also in subjects provided by a school or organization. This may help the student when applying for college or college scholarships.

The prospect of earning transferable credits is another benefit of online classes for homeschoolers. Homeschoolers are required to maintain their own records and transcripts. With some online classes, the credit earned are put on an accredited transcript which makes them transferable if a student re-enter public school or goes to college.

Even though most homeschooling families prefer to be in charge of their home education program, some families enjoy the option of distance education for homeschooling.

Parents Resources Abound In Miami Schools

The Miami Schools district is one of immense size. It serves students from all walks of life. In order to stay connected with their students' first teachers (the parents) the Miami Schools have devised several ways to encourage parents to become involved in their children's school experience. Some of these avenues are: The Office of Parental Involvement, The Parent Academy, the Bilingual Parent Outreach Program (offered by the Division of Bilingual Education and World Languages), and the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) or the PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association).

Each Miami School has a Parent Teacher Association or a Parent Teacher Student Association. This is a local organization that generally meets at individual Miami Schools. It is connected to the Dade County Council PTA/PTSA, which is part of the Florida PTA. The PTA's mission is as follows:

• to support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community, and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children;

• to assist parents in developing skills needed to raise, protect, and prepare their children; and

• to encourage parent and public involvement in [Miami Schools].

The Bilingual Parent Outreach Program offers a series of free workshops on various topics, in an effort to increase participation of LEP (Limited English Proficiency) and/or immigrant families in their children's education in the Miami Schools. Research indicates that most parents of immigrant students are reluctant to get involved in their children's school functions due to language or cultural barriers. The workshops that the Bilingual Parent Outreach Program offers are hosted in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole, with the hope that parents will feel more comfortable in getting involved in the Miami Schools their children attend.

The Parent Academy, or TPA, offers Miami Schools' parents the opportunity to experience an academic, collegiate environment while learning how to help their students succeed. There are a multitude of classes available to parents, including "The A.B.C.s of Miami…Schools" on "How to Help My Child With Math!" Parents can also take classes on how to help their child, and life skills classes such as "How to Write a Resume for a New Job". For the parents who want to earn their degrees, the TPA offers accelerated coursework.

The Office of Parental Involvement strives to encourage all parents to take an active part in their children's education experience while studying at Miami Schools. In a recent letter to parents, Rudolph F. Crew, Superintendent of Schools and Gary M. Pappas, Chairman of The Education Fund had this to say: "Parental involvement is at the heart of student achievement, and you play a pivotal role in the education of your children. …To help you continue on this path, [Miami Schools] and The Education Fund have created the Parent Resource Guide – a 'one-stop' source with helpful tips and information to guide you as you advocate for your child. …The Parent Resource Guide is meant to be a source for sharing information that will empower you to impact your child's success [while attending a Miami School] and after graduation."

Choose A Seminary Wisely

Life is full of many important decisions, not the least of which is what kind of education you will receive and what kind of educational choices are best for you. If it is true that education in the means to freedom, which I believe that it is, then what kind of education you choose is extremely important in determining what kind of life you will have. The same is true when you are deciding about what seminary is right for you.

Having thoughts of going to seminary reflects a lot of previous decisions that you have already made about the kind of person you want to be and the kind of life you want to lead. In fact, your desire for seminary means a lot of things about you, probably more than you even realize. But don't let the fact that you're on the right track hinder you from realizing the supreme importance of what seminary you choose for your next step of education.

Before you begin to research any particular seminary, it is a good idea to sit down and make a list of your priorities in the decision making process. For example, deciding whether location is more important to you than theological association is a very important decision to be made. If you want to stay within your home state or within your denomination for your seminary training than your options will be narrowed immediately and your choice will be much easier. So take a look at your priorities for your seminary education and let that lead you in the process.

Once you have learned what is most important to you, then don't compromise when looking for those things. Continue searching with patience and preseverance until you find a seminary that matches the very things you want. Realize too, however, that you may have to compromise on some aspects of your choice. So be willing to be flexible on things that are not as important to you.

Choosing a seminary will likely influence the rest of your life. So take your time and make the decision with care. Know yourself and your educational and life goals before you jump into anything. A wise seminary choice will be reflected by great success once you arrive to begin taking classes. Talk with friends and professors for suggestions, but ultimately you must be ready to make the decision for yourself.

Give Your Dog the Best Education & Training

Your dog deserves the best training possible and finding the right dog trainer is important. But, where do you find the best candidates for the job?

Your dog is not just a pet, he or she is a member of your family and, just as you do with other members of your family, you want to make sure your dog receives the best education.

Of course, a dog training facility is important, but the key to good training is the trainer.

Choosing the right trainer is not only better for your dog, but it is also better for you. Good trainers don't just get your dog to do a few "tricks", they teach your dog how to learn, which results in a happier, more confident dog. You benefit from the sense of pride that comes with having a well trained pet by your side.

It all sounds easy enough, but how do you find the best dog trainer? There are no hard and fast rules, and often there's a bit of luck involved, but you can take a few steps to make your search a little easier.

Fortunately, there are professional dog trainer associations and they are a good place to start. Many trainers have taken the time to become certified and an association can put you in contact with certified professionals in your area.

Your veterinarian or groomer can be a good source of information. They know your dog and are in a good position to recommend a trainer with the right fit for your particular needs.

Of course, it never hurts to talk to family, friends and neighbours about their experiences with dog trainers.

No matter how you go about finding a trainer, you need to talk to the potential candidates and find out for yourself which ones you feel will be best able to train your dog. Ask about the trainer's certifications and membership in professional associations. Find out if they are involved in any continuing education for dog trainers. Perhaps most importantly, you need to have a comfort level with the trainer so you can work together for the benefit of your dog.

The certified dog trainers at Alpha Paws have the experience and knowledge to answer your questions, make recommendations and keep you informed about your dog's needs and progress.

Financial Planning - Send Your Kids To College

The idea of financing kids' college education through long term financial planning is not new. For the past decades, parents have made the efforts to save and invest for the security of their kids' future. The government participates and creates several laws to support easier financial planning for parent. And up to now, the government has been improving the system of education and polishing the laws to better give the kids the right and secured education they deserve.

The result of years of improving the financial planning system is the creation of several options to effectively build up the necessary funds to send kids to college.

Here are some options for the financial plan to send your kids to college and keep up with the increasingly growing tuition fees in these educational institutes.

Prepaid-tuition plans.

Perhaps, one of the more popular long term financial planning options is the prepaid-tuition plans. It works like college-savings plans. It works by allowing you to save for college education in a tax-deferred investment. Prepaid-tuition plans are based on the present cost of college education and not the projected cost of college tuition in the time when your kids are due to college. So whether the tuition fee cost is doubled or tripled by the time your kids reach college, you will still pay the present cost of college education. Prepaid-tuition plan is for parents who want to take the game of stocks and bonds. Therefore, prepaid-college plans can be a less risky investment to make.

Another good thing about prepaid-tuition plans is that they are considered at parent's assets rather than the kids' money.

But in every financial investment there are expected drawbacks. Most prepaid-tuition plans do not cover other educational expenses such as dorm, lodging, and everyday expenditures. Prepaid-tuition plans also have the possibility of shutting down even before your kids get into college. This will result in loosing the money you have invested for a very long time.

Prepaid-tuition plans are currently available in 18 states (Illinois, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Virginia, Nevada, Colorado, Maryland, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Massachusetts, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Washington). Meanwhile, the state of Alaska offers the prepaid-tuition plans as college savings plan option.

3.Individual Corporate Bonds or Stocks

A bond is a guarantee that you will be repaid with any amount you have invested on a company in face value, plus the fixed interest rate at a particular set date. Stock is a representation of a part ownership of a company. Making money on stocks is a long term process and quite risky. The market value of the stock may increase or decrease over time. Even from big and stable companies, stock fluctuations can be very unpredictable but if you end with on the winning side, investing on stocks is very rewarding. If you are a type of parent who does not take risks, this is not the type of investment you should be thinking of.

Brown versus the Board of Education

In 1951, thirteen families in the small community of Topeka, Kansas got together to do something about an unjust situation. The board of education of their community was allowing racial segregation in the school system based on an out of date 1879 law. The leader of this group of concerned parents was Oliver J. Brown and the outcome of what started out as a few parents trying to make life better for their children became one of the most infamous and influential supreme court cases in history known as Brown versus the Board of Education.

The practice of school segregation had become a common and accepted practice in American society despite many movements in the history of civil rights to stop the separation of black society from white. The justification that segregation provided a "separate but equal" setting which benefited education, the truth was it was a thinly veiled attempt to deprive African American children of the quality of education that all people need to excel in the modern world.

The case continued to gather momentum until it came before the Supreme Court in May of 1954. The decision was stunning and decisive when it came back 9-0. The statement of the court was brief, eloquent and to the point stating that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal."

Now even such a definitive statement from the Supreme Court did not end the struggle between segregationists and those who would end the practice that deprived African American children of quality education. In 1957 the Arkansas governor tried to block the integration of schools in his state and the only thing that could stop him was the intervention of federal troops sent by President Eisenhower. A similar but much more well publicized event occurred in Alabama where Governor George Wallace physically blocked black students from entering the University of Alabama. It took the intervention of federal marshals to physically remove him to assure that the law of the land, as mandated by The Supreme Court, was carried out. And the law of the land then and forever since then was that segregation was illegal in this country.

Since this landmark decision, there have been other more crafty attempts to resurrect segregation. But over the decades, attitudes have shifted to where such views on how our social institutions are set up are considered old fashioned and uneducated.

The integration of the schools was an important step in the ongoing struggle to create a truly equal society and to improve the chances of black children to grow up with the same opportunities as all other children in this country. As more and more African American children became well educated, the black population has been able to make a strong contribution to the culture and to the advancement of knowledge in every discipline of learning. Further, the growing educated black population brought about the black middle class which equalized society from an economic point of view. As African Americans began to participate in all of the economic opportunities that middle class prosperity afforded them, the chances for whites, blacks and people of all races and cultures to mix has been healthy to heal the scars of racism and slowly erase divisions in the culture.

But maybe the most important outcome of integration of the schools is the opportunity it has given for children of all races to learn, play and grow together. As young black and white students have attended classes, gone to football games and hung out at pep rallies together, they have become friends. They have had chances to work together on teams and socialize under many situations and as that has become the social norm, racism began to evaporate from the hearts of young America.

As a result, youth of modern times look on racism as a strange and primitive viewpoint from long ago and not in step with an up to date view of the world. This kind of true acceptance both by whites toward blacks and by blacks toward whites will go further to finally end racial separation and intolerance more than any riot or protest or march or even ruling from the Supreme Court could ever do. And we have Oliver Brown and that small group of parents from Topeka, Kansas to thank for this. By doing what was best for their kids, they did something wonderful for all of America's children both now and for generations to come.

Earning Your Associate’s Degree Online

An Associate's degree, or a "two-year" degree, provides a valuable pathway to career enhancement, and provides an educational foundation which makes it easier to earn a Bachelor's degree down the road. Earning an Associate's degree online is a flexible, convenient, and innovative way to advance your career and improve your education. Traditionally, going to college requires a student to physically attend. This often requires relocating, or settling for a college because it is close to home. The advantages of technology now afford students the opportunity to attend college outside the confines of a traditional college, and earn a degree online. As the popularity of earning a degree online increases, more traditional colleges are joining online-only colleges in offering educations over the Internet, presenting students with broader educational options, not to mention flexibility and convenience.

In order to land that promotion you've worked so hard for, or attain the career of your dreams, it's often necessary to have some type of secondary education. There are many advantages to earning your Associate's degree online. Receiving your Associate's degree online allows you to achieve your career goals at your own pace, without interfering with your current work commitments. You need not live locally to attend the college of your choosing. Attending courses and submitting coursework online eliminates the need for commuting or relocating. Convenience is another plus in earning a degree online. A college may offer more sections of popular courses at many convenient times, including nights and weekends, allowing you more options as to when to attend class. This allows you more flexibility, and is ideal if you work full time and/or care for a family. In addition, who wouldn't find it appealing to attend college from the comforts of home?

There are many types of Associate's degrees you can learn online. There is certainly a degree to suit every educational and professional need. Some of these programs include General Education, Information Technology, Paralegal Studies, Business, Healthcare, and various professional certificates. These are but a few of the programs available to study online. Most of these programs are offered at fully accredited colleges that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, which is a necessity if you have prior college credits that you wish to transfer, if you intend to continue at another college in order to receive a Bachelor's degree, or if you want your degree recognized by your employer and any professional organizations you are affiliated with.

You might be worried about affording an online Associate's degree. Often, financial aid is available to online students in the form of grants, loans, and even scholarships. Also, many employers may be willing to pay for part or all of your tuition and fees. After all, investing in your education is investing in the firm's future as well.

The misconception of receiving your Associate's degree online is that the experience might not be as enriching or legitimate as attending face-to-face classes at a traditional college. The degree programs offered online present the same opportunities for group work, independent study, and interpersonal communications as their traditional counterparts. In fact, continuing your education online might help to facilitate the learning process as well as develop time management and self-motivation skills. With the prevalence of the Internet and advancements such as teleconferencing in both education and the business world today, it is possible to come away from the experience not only with a degree, but also with greater knowledge and comfort with technology, which could prove to enhance your career as well. Receiving your Associate's degree online is a valuable, convenient, and flexible way to broaden your career opportunities.

How to Earn an Associates Degree Online

You graduate high school and look forward to continuing your education at a college or university. Your first sixty credits help you earn an associates degree. This degree can help you get a better job or transfer to a better university. If you need to work or raise a family, but still want to work towards an associates degree, enroll in an online associates degree program. With a little research, you can find associates degree programs that are easily transferable to other schools.

Community colleges are popular for students who want to get their associates degree before working or attending a large school. Community colleges are also cheaper than larger schools. Community colleges offer distance education for associate degrees and certificates. Certain career development schools also offer associates degrees and certificates online. Depending on your future goals, this option is becoming more popular for students who wish to obtain a degree.

Associate degree programs are available online from an abundant number of schools. Associate degrees do not usually require too much field experience, so they are easier to offer online than degrees that require more in depth field experience. You can get an associate of arts degree or an associate of science degree online. The AA gives you credits worthy of transferring and the AS gives you a degree worthy of taking into the workforce. Online programs for both degrees include: criminal justice, education, accounting, psychology, sociology, business, automotive technology, computer technology and more.

Once you have done a little research and decided on your major, contact the schools you are interested in to find out if they offer your degree online. You can also research schools online to find schools out of your general area that may offer your major. Just make sure that any school you choose is accredited by an agency recognized by the Department of Education. You will have trouble transferring college credit from any online associates degree from an unaccredited school. Once you find a school, the application process is the same as if you were registering at the regular school. You will need to send in test scores and high school transcripts.

Once you are registered, begin enrolling in classes. Most classes will still require that you buy the same textbook that campus classes are using. Your professor will most likely assign reading sections from the textbook along with any work assignments. The great thing is that the due date will not be two days away. Online classes offer much more scheduling freedom than on campus classes.

If you are taking distance education classes at a local community college, you might consider taking a few night classes on campus along with your distance education classes. Once you have completed sixty or more credits, your school will grant you the associates degree. Most schools will allow online degree graduates to get their diploma with the other graduates at the graduation ceremony. If you work diligently, you can earn an online associates degree in two years or less.

A New Age In Nursing Education: College Degrees Online

It can be difficult for anyone who works to obtain a college degree or to increase upon their current level of education. This can be especially difficult for those people who are pursing a degree in a nursing field. The attempt to juggle work, classes, family and clinical hours can be overwhelming and discouraging. Advances in technology have now made it a little easier to obtain your degree and reach your goals.

Numerous colleges now offer degrees online, including nursing degrees. The advantages of taking nursing courses over the internet are numerous. With online courses a student can continue to work while attending college, without having to adjust a work schedule around a class schedule. Students no longer have to commute to a campus only to waste more time searching for a place to park. No more paying for a parking permit to park on the campus that you are paying to attend. No more sitting in a classroom for hours each day only to listen to an instructor lecture on the topics that you have already read about. Imagine being able to log onto your class when it's convenient for you. These are just a few benefits of obtaining your degree online.

Online nursing courses are not as difficult as one may think. Once classes begin the student will log into their internet classroom. Most college sites will have a list of courses that you are registered in. Clicking on the course name will take you to more information about that particular course. You can locate your syllabus, assignment schedule, contact info for your instructor and classmates, forums and chat rooms to talk to other students, and detailed instructions on how to submit assignments and complete your course. Help is always available from either the instructor or other classmates.

Online college students qualify for the same financial aid as the traditional campus based student. Federal Student Aid, State Student Aid, student loans, scholarships, and grants are all available for application. Federal and State Aid have financial requirements for qualification, but anyone, regardless of income or credit history, qualifies for student loans. Make sure you apply by the due dates for student aid so you don't miss any assistance you might qualify for.

People who are already working in the medical field as a nurses aid, LPN or RN who would like to increase their education and certification usually have even more advantages available to help them succeed. Many healthcare employers now provide tuition reimbursement and/or scholarships to employees who want to expand their education. If you can't afford to pay the tuition and await the reimbursement then consider a student loan than you can repay once you receive your tuition. Contact your human resource department to find out what is available. Another advantage is that many hospitals have set up study groups for online nursing students. This provides nursing students with the advantage of personal interaction with other nursing students of varying education.

To obtain a nursing degree, you may be required to complete clinical hours within a medical and/or hospital setting. You may wonder how you can do this if the college you are taking online courses through is across the country from where you reside. Your instructors will help you set up these clinical hours at a medical facility near your home.

The demand for nurses has risen dramatically and shortages in the nursing field continue to be a problem. With the advent of online nursing classes, more people are able to obtain their degree and provide much needed medical care to the people of your community.

Your Obese Child & School Programs

More than five years ago, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) published 'Guidelines for School and Community Programs' to promote physical activity in children and teenagers, in hopes of helping them develop lifelong exercise and physical fitness regimens.

If you, as a parent, understand and embrace these guidelines, you can work with your school system and with community centers and programs, like the YMCA and the Boy Scouts, to encourage and even help to develop physical activity and exercise programs that support your goals.

If your child is obese, slightly overweight or simply in danger of falling into the great, black pit of video gaming, you need to get them off the couch, out from in front of the computer or video game station, and out into the fresh air to get some exercise.

Without exercise, diet is much less successful.

Although your child may balk at physical activities at first, they will eventually find that they feel better, sleep better and function better when they exercise.

Take a look at some of the CDC guidelines and look for ways to get your child more involved in exercise, and/or to get YOURSELF more involved in the development of these programs in your schools and community.

The CDC encourages schools and community organizations alike to establish policies and guidelines that encourage physical activity that is enjoyable and that is suitable for all age groups, so that exercise becomes a lifelong activity.

Schools MUST require physical education credits and provide detailed health education and courses to teach children proper nutritional habits and to show them the right way to exercise so that they are not injured in the process.

Schools will find and implement physical education and exercise programs that encourage physical activity and offer enjoyable options. Activities like dance, gymnastics, sports and other options should be offered with supervised coaching to avoid injury. Not all activities should be competitive!

Activities should be sequential, advancing in complexity and challenge as the child ages to allow them to achieve physical potential.

At minimum, National Physical Fitness standards should be met.

Both schools and community organizations must provide funding and adequate supervision and guidance for physical activities, sports, and exercise equipment.

These activities and equipment choices must provide a broad range of options to satisfy the interests of all the children in the community, and school system.

Community and school programs should include activities that are appropriate for children of all ages and all levels of ability.

These programs should be advertised and promoted to children to advise them of the availability and the programs should be desirable and enjoyable for the age group and type of children who are expected to participate.

Health education classes should help students develop knowledge and skills to encourage and enhance proper diet and exercise programs. These programs should foster an appropriate attitude so that all children WANT to live a healthy life style.

Programs should stress moderation in all activities so that children see exercise as one of the things they will do every day, in addition to the other activities they love, e.g. computer or video games, or watching TV or movies.

All coaches, teachers, health education staff, and recreation directors should have appropriate training to manage and promote this physical education and exercise programs and to ensure that the children under their supervision safely participate in these programs.

Safe, supervised access to facilities and equipment is critical!

Unstructured play time is important during school and after school, with tools and equipment to encourage impromptu games, e.g. balls, bats, jump ropes, gymnastics equipment.

Parents and teachers should come together to discuss the availability of school and community exercise and physical education programs.

Parents should be encouraged to take on exercise and physical activities and to share these with their children as appropriate; to become role models for their kids by exercising and participating in physical activities during family events, at work functions, while visiting the park, etc.

All school and community programs should be evaluated periodically.

This evaluation should be detailed enough to ensure that the needs of the children in the community are being met.

Does each child have more than one option and opportunity for exercise and health education in multiple venues and facilities?

Now that you understand the CDC recommendations, take a look at your own school system and at the extracurricular, and community availability of physical activities, sports and exercise options.

If your community is lagging behind in these programs, get actively involved. Your attendance and presentation at a town board meeting can get organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, and the YMCA into your community.

And you can talk to your school board and PTA or PTO about the shortcomings in your physical education and health programs, and how your school system may be able to improve their current programs.

You will find it much easier to help your child meet their weight loss or fitness goals when you have community and school system support.

For your overweight, obese or inactive child, this support and assistance is priceless!
